Installing FI-STAR

FI-STAR uses Java(TM) 2 Platform, Standard Edition and Java(TM) Web Start, which must be downloaded and installed on the local computer before FI-STAR can be installed and started. It was designed so there is no need for any special proprietary technology.

 

To install Java(TM) 2 Platform, Standard Edition and Java(TM) Web Start:

 

1.  Download Java(TM) 2 Platform, Standard Edition (any of the 1.3 versions will do) by first clicking on the following link: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html.

 

2.  Click on "Download" that corresponds to the operating system you will be using.

 

3.  Read the following license agreement and click on the "Accept" button.

 

4.  Click on "Download j2re-1_3_1_07-windows-i586.exe" or download the latest 1.3.1 JRE from www.sun.com.

 

5.  Choose the "Run this program from its current location" radio button.

 

6.  When the Security Warning comes up to install and run Java 2 Runtime Environment, choose "Yes".

 

7.  After reading the license agreement, choose "Yes".

 

8.  Use the default destination folder and click "Next>".

 

9.  Choose the Browser you prefer to use and click "Next>".

 

10.  After the installation is complete, download Java(TM) Web Start by clicking on the following link: http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/download-windows.html.

 

11.  Click on the "continue" button in the "Update Package" box.

 

12.  Read the terms and conditions and click on the "Accept" button at the bottom of the page.

 

13.  Click on the first "FTP download" button from java.sun.com.

 

14.  Choose the "Run this program from its current location" radio button to start downloading.

 

15.  Click "Yes" to install and run Java Web Start.

 

16.  Read the license agreement and click on the "Accept" button.

 

17.  Use the default location and click "Next>".

 

18.  Installation is now finished and you are ready to log on.

 

 

Configuring Java Web Start:

 

1.  In the "General" tab, choose the "None" radio button for the choice of proxies.

 

2.  In the "Java" tab, make sure the Java Platform Version is 1.3.

 

3.  If you would like to log the debugging outputs, go to the "Advanced" tab and check the "Log Output" box and enter the Log File Name.

 

4.  Click "OK".
